Article from Politico's Ben Smith- RNC Fallout- Comment
Politico by Ben Smith RNC Fallout: ‘Ashamed’ donor closes checkbook A prominent Evangelical figure and Republican donor says he will end his contributions to the organized Republican Party in reaction to the leaked fundraising presentation that advised using "fear" to solicit contributions and displayed an image of President Obama as the Joker from Batman. Mark DeMoss, who heads a major Christian public relations firm in Atlanta and served as a liaison to the Evangelical community for Mitt Romney in 2008, wrote Chairman Michael Steele yesterday that he was "ashamed" of the presentation, calling depictions of Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Majority Leader Harry Reid "shameful, immature and uncivil, at best." "I’m afraid the presentation is representative of a culture and mindset within the Republican National Committee," DeMoss, a past member of the RNC’s "Eagle" program for top donors who gave the party $15,000 in 2008, wrote in the letter to Steele, which he shared with POLITICO. (DeMoss hasn’t given this cycle.) "Consequently, I will no longer contribute to any fundraising entity of our Party—but will contribute only to individual candidates I choose to support." The letter was copied to House and Senate Republican leaders, whose campaign committees DeMoss said he’d also stop supporting. DeMoss, whose causes include a project devoted to civility and who is the scion of a major Evangelical family, concluded: "Mr. Chairman, I love giving money to candidates at every level who I believe in and want to see elected. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to consider making a contribution to the Party itself. The sort of behavior displayed in Boca Grande only contributes to the widespread cynicism of politics in general and our Party in particular. It is, in my opinion, indefensible and destructive." His full letter is after the jump. March 5, 2010 Chairman Michael Steele Republican National Committee 310 First Street SE Washington, DC 20003 Dear Mr. Chairman: Like many Republicans today, I am ashamed of the fundraising presentation given by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart at last month’s GOP gathering in Boca Grande, Florida. The depictions of President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid were shameful, immature and uncivil, at best. While I realize your office made steps to distance you from this presentation I’m afraid the presentation is representative of a culture and mindset within the Republican National Committee; consequently, I will no longer contribute to any fundraising entity of our Party—but will contribute only to individual candidates I choose to support. I have been a member of the Republican Eagles on a number of occasions in the past, including the 2008 cycle. I have been constantly solicited by the RNC, the NRSC and the NRCC, among other GOP organizations and efforts. Recently I was visited in my office by Lynn Westmoreland, who shared with me the redistricting efforts he is leading in the House. He was requesting funds for this initiative (without the sort of nonsense presented recently by your Finance Director) and I was considering contributing to the project. I will not consider doing so now, with apologies to Congressman Westmoreland. Mr. It is, in my opinion, indefensible and destructive. Why did the RNC do that random presentation for its donors? I mean not only tacky but not even really intelligent or funny or original. None of that would motivate me to give a dime. Sorry party but..im not buying

Anyone disappointed in the President's comments at the end of the Heathcare summit today? Basically he said thanks for coming Republicans, but we're not using your ideas and we're gonna push the deal through as is. HUH? All for show apparently. I thought the Republicans did well overall making their case, but to no avail.

The problem is that everyone is afraid of not being re-elected. They are going to have a wake up call in the Fall when their BIG SPENDING, BIG GOV'T, EXTREMIST ways are punished (I'm talking Senators in BOTH parties) by the voters. They are going to lose their jobs if they don't start representing the people.

The problem is that in the State of the Union he made is seem like the Reps had not made ANY suggestions on healthcare and here he said..i saw your suggestions and we incorporated some of them...so he's one way to the masses and another to the people who really DIG for the truth. Hate that. But he did call some out on hey...I read your stuff...now you read my HC bill guys. I don't trust that he's not trying to WAY over build govt. and is SPENDING us into oblivion. But in this case, he did okay.

O.k., Spunky, I watched the whole thing and here's what I think...Obama has been listening to O-MAMA! For crying out loud, he is finally acknowledging there is another party to consider! I liked the way both the Republicans framed their questions and the fact that the President stood there, listened and answered them. For the first time, I could stand listening to him (sorry, not very O-MAMAish), but I thought he handled himself well and both parties were respectful. It forced Obama to listen (without the filter of Pelosi).

"We are not ready for a government run country, but are satisfied with by the people-for the people?" That's called anarchy. We need government to function better, but we need a government. Who do you think keeps us safe? Military? Police? Firemen? Who do you think creates the laws that keep us civil? Who do you think puts money into research & development, so we get new technologies and medicines? Who do you think regulates the water supply and the roads and bridges? I hate to break it to you, it's not THE PEOPLE. It is the government who works to improve the lives of the people it serves. I don't disagree that the government needs to be more efficient and effective, but we need a government. And, our government needs to work for the people and be elected by the people. But, we do need a government to run the country. Let's not get crazy!

@momof2: I am from England and I have to say healthcare is not as awful as they are portraying it on the television - England's biggest issue is overcrowding due to immigration - this has flooded the emergency rooms and backed up elected surgeries. America could adopt the same system as England and not have the same issues. The greatest thing about the English system is you don't hesitate to get care or have a preventative test or treatment because of cost. Even though the United Kingdom has developed a reputation for lengthy patient queues, its National Health Service (NHS) has some valuable attributes that are worth studying as the US struggles to control its health care costs.

I understand we're a divided country, some disagreements on health care etc. How is ANYONE against this? However I need to add to this story as it turns out the all-male, all-white bloc of thirty Republican senators aren't the only ones against this bill. (check out this mock website for the offending 30) www.republicansforrape.org - However the men had an ally in opposition that has so far gone unreported: the Department of Defense. "The DoD opposes the proposed amendment," reads a message sent from the administration to the Senate on October 6. Their reasoning is that it would be too hard to enforce such a bill. REALLY? Honestly both parties are a mess right now - the republicans are letting extremists be their mouth pieces and the Democrats are trying to make everyone happy and not getting a darn thing done.

Has anyone heard about the vote on the Franken's anti-government contractor rape bill? This bill was inspired by Halliburton/KBR employee Jamie Leigh Jones was violently gang-raped by her co-workers while in Iraq. After she reported the crime, KBR ordered her to be held prisoner in a shipping container by armed guards. She was denied food, water and medical treatment for over a day until outside forces intervened to have her released from KBR custody. KBR "lost" the rape kit and other evidence collected in the case. When she arrived home she was not allowed to sue because her employment contract said that sexual assault allegations would only be heard in private arbitration - a process that overwhelmingly favors the employers. The legislative amendment states that the US government will not hire companies who make employees sign a contract saying that they will not sue if they are raped by other employees. Franken's amendment should put an end to such atrocities, but not all members of the Senate were on board. The final vote was 68-30 in favor. My question is how can 30 senators vote against this bill? Please tell me they were not choosing a corporation over human beings or have we come to a point where the senators just vote against the opposing party no matter what the issue?

(posted by me in another discussion group) Sadly our politicians are incapable of actually standing up for their beliefs anymore. Lobbyists and special interest groups now hold the reigns. The desperate need for campaign funds and votes have totally blocked bi-partisanship. Though many may start out with well-intentioned ideals, they soon learn how to play the game. It muzzles them and stunts their growth. Change in our country can no longer come from our elected officials, who are incapable of creating change. We have to take the responsibility for ourselves and actually VOICE our opinions, not just whisper about them in social gatherings.

@momof2: I think we need to be very clear on our views on human rights as a nation. I remember when we invaded Iraq - at first it was WMD's and then there was mumblings about human rights - but that was a slippery slope - because human rights violations are taking place in many countries. I think we have to be respectful of other cultures and other histories which can involve centuries of conflicts. I think the US can release a statement supporting the Dalai Lama but show respect for the Chinese government. Are we savvy enough to keep the middle east in our pocket instead of letting China control the situation for oil, power, money? What is the solution? Is political posturing by the US with China over the Dalai Lama gonna do it, or does this make us look weak to China further emboldening them? Does this little move make THAT much difference to the Chinese's economic policies with us?

@momof2: Because if we continue down the path we are going - China will be the next super power and I guess we want them to like us. Look at England - they were the empire until they went around invading other countries and trying to enforce their policies on them. War costs money - England may have conquered some nations but their economy fell in the toilet - so Russia and the US became the next super powers - Russia's economy fell first and now the US is right behind - China is quietly waiting in the wings watching us self-destruct so it can happily move up to the top slot.
