THE WORD ON THE STREET: Sesame Street is 40

It’s middle aged, but still hip!  Sesame Street debuted on this day in 1969.  Today, the program is cutting edge and beginning its two-year initiative, “My World Is Green & Growing” focusing on nature and the environment.  Big Bird opens the show by choosing his new habitat, the rain forest, but then declares that, “Sesame Street is my home!”  The show’s puppet master, Jim Henson, hand-picked Caroll Spinney who still plays Big Bird and Oscar.  Spinney will be 76 this year and began the show at 35.  He marvels that it’s been so long since the show started saying, ”it seems like years, but I’d NEVER guess 40!”

MOMism: “Time flies when you’re having fun!”  Boy does it!  We MAMAs have grown up watching this program, and have been able to pass down that tradition to our kids.  Generations have learned to read (C is for Cookie-monster), count (with the Count), deal with roommates (thanks to Burt and Ernie), and speak Spanish (con Rosita). Our kids are learning the same great lessons from the same cast of characters.  They’re the people that we meet…each day…on TV.  Happy birthday to our old friend Sesame Street…and many more!

I LOVE Sesame Street - grew up on it and so have my kids!!! However...The above article states that Jim Henson will be 76 this year and quoted him as saying...”it seems like years, but I’d NEVER guess 40!” Ummm...Jim Henson has been dead for years. Please explain!!

YES!!! Jim Hensen is no longer here, but his hand-picked puppeteer, Caroll Spinney, still is!!! He turns 76 this year and started working on Sesame Street when he was 35. Thanks MAMA.
