“Redefining Romance”: Opinionated MAMA’s Perspective on VALENTINE’S DAY

Love is in the air.  Hearts and roses.  Hugs and kisses.  Love.  Love.  Sweet love. We dream about it, write poems about it, watch movies about it, listen to sappy songs about it.  It makes us laugh, it makes us cry, it makes us do crazy things. Love, sweet love.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage.  Then, what?  Hearts and flowers go out the window.  We’re up to our eyeballs in diapers and laundry.  We wear nursing bras and granny panties.  We don’t feel sexy - we’re tired,...

We don’t feel sexy - we’re tired, we’re stressed, we can’t zip up our favorite jeans and it just seems like Valentine’s is another thing “to do.” We want to be in the mood, but can’t always get there.  Sprinkling rose pedals all over the bedroom doesn’t make us feel like doing it, it makes us wonder who the hell he thinks is going to clean it up?!

When we become mothers, sometimes the things that make our hearts go pitter pat are a little different than they used to be…we don’t go weak in the knees when our husband simply walks into the room, unless he’s picking up toys while he’s doing it.  We don’t feel like jumping him when he gets out of the shower, unless he has just scrub a dub dubbed a little person.  He’s not sexy when he’s eating dinner, unless he washes the dishes afterward.  Then, he’s totally H-O-T.

A mom’s heart-strings are in knots…they are attached to our babies and our brains now. Our guys need to know, if they want to get us into bed, they need to help put the kids to bed.  When we asked Opinionated MAMAs what they really wanted for Valentine’s Day last year, you said “hot sex” (26%), “a handwritten love letter” (24%) and “maid service” (22%).  Which made us think, maybe they’re all connected?! A love letter oozing with flirtatious appreciation and a clean house would most certainly lead to hot sex!

Cupid has a moving target when lovers become mothers…our hearts are full…it’s just that our heads are spinning. Which reminds us of a spin cycle, which reminds us of overflowing laundry baskets…so, if our guy wants us to throw ourselves at him, you guessed it, he should throw in some laundry!  We just don’t have time to do it all…be the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect us. Something’s gotta give and it’s usually romance, sorry fellas – so “you gotta give a little, to get a little.” That’s the key to a busy MAMAs heart.

So, how do O-MAMAs spell romance?

R         - Reservations; hire a sitter and take us out

O         - Open the doors; yep, some old-fashioned courting would be sweet

M         - Make a Valentine; homemade with love

A         - Alone time; give us some time to ourselves to just BE

N         - New panties; forget the lingerie, but we'll take some freshies (new diapers for the baby and/or comfies for us)

C         - Chores; the more you help, the more action you get

E         - Embrace the MOMent, because romance is redefined when you make babies; it is not about a particular day, it’s about embracing life and love together every day.

MAMAs, we hope you get lots of homemade Valentine’s, some help around the house and lots of sweet kisses!  Happy Valentine’s Day.

I let my husband off the hook for Valentine's Day before we ever got married (29 yrs ago!). It's more important to me how he treats me on a daily basis, and over time, he has proven his love to me by what he does and says... and how he says it. Those are much more important than candy, card, or flowers (and after 29 years, hot sex? I don't think so).
