- QUE DE MAYO?: Cinco de Mayo US Holiday
-
The common myth about Cinco de Mayo is that it celebrates Mexican Independence Day- which is September 16th. Untrue. In fact, it is a regional holiday commemorating Mexico's win over the French at the Battle of Puebla. In fact, the holiday is not celebrated in Mexico at all. Instead, gringos celebrate this "invented" holiday with all things Mexican (tequila) and a few things that Americans THINK are Mexican (like nachos) but are not. Still, it's a good excuse to get together with family and have a fiesta!
MOMism: "Celebrate good times!" Viva Mexico!

- Anything even remotely celebrating a mexican victory, same as the name of the proposed mosque was to reflect their "victory" over us. They are basically trying to take the country simply by out breeding everyone else, per their own admissions.on 09/29/10Reply

This is yet another of those "invented" holidays to prove that Americans are accepting of other cultures. The statement that Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated in Mexico is correct...so why should we celebrate it here? All in the name of diversity???on 06/18/10Reply
