“Redefining Romance”: Opinionated MAMA’s Perspective on VALENTINE’S DAY

Love is in the air.  Hearts and roses.  Hugs and kisses.  Love.  Love.  Sweet love. We dream about it, write poems about it, watch movies about it, listen to sappy songs about it.  It makes us laugh, it makes us cry, it makes us do crazy things. Love, sweet love.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage.  Then, what?  Hearts and flowers go out the window.  We’re up to our eyeballs in diapers and laundry.  We wear nursing bras and granny panties.  We don’t feel sexy - we’re tired,...

POLE DANCING PRINCESS: Miss USA Under Scrutiny

Miss Michigan won the Miss USA pageant, becoming the first Arab American to do so. It has now come out that Rima Fakih pole danced on Detroit radio’s Mojo in the morning show back in 2007. The radio show has posted photos of Fakih dancing, on their website. During the pole dancing contest, she is wearing shorts and t-shirt and did not remove her clothing. Fakih did win “jewelry, gift cards, adult toys and a stripper pole for home use,“ as a prize for her prowess.

MOMism:” Use your head.”  It’s too bad that this beauty went pole dancer on a radio show. (Kudos for not going commando!) What message does it send to young girls when Miss USA rocks a pole?  Sex sells? Beauty trumps brains? We need to encourage our kids to use their heads even when they’re young and stupid...because it's brains, not beauty, that earn women respect and dignity. Beauty fades...unless it's on the inside.

I think the problem is much more systemic than this. We have media of every type telling girls (as young as toddlers) that a woman's worth is tied to beauty, and these beauty contests are perpetuating that problem. However, pole dancing, in this instance, without taking off the clothes, is no different than what women do on the dance floor of any club, just without the pole as a prop. We tell women that its okay to go out dancing (which frankly I dont see the harm in) but watch out if someone takes a pic of her and she decides to do something in the public eye. Also, we all make silly or stupid decisions.. its just that some of us end up in the spotlight and those decisions come back to haunt us. SO I suppose to sum it all up.. I dont see anything wrong with what she did, in the context that she was doing nothing illegal, and was in fact doing something that millions of American girls do every Friday or Saturday night with their friends (with or without the pole), and she's doing exactly what our own society perpetuates. If we dont like what she did, we need to focus our attentiomn and energy on changing the percepetions of what is important about women in our own communities and through educating our children; we should not be judging this woman for doing what most girls already do, but are lucky enough to NOT have it broadcast all over the world.

Let's start with that fact that we still have beauty contests, the most antiquated ritual imaginable. So if Miss USA pole danced before -- how is that different from the swimsuit competition with "the Donald" grinning on the front row?
