FEATHERING OUR NESTS: O-MAMA’s Perspective on SPRING CLEANING

Spring is in the air.  The birds and the bees are flitting around doing their thing…nature abounds.  The birds are feathering their nests and laying their eggs, while the bees are busy pollinating every flower in the garden.  The air is crisp and clean.  Chirping and buzzing fills the air.

Everything seems fresh and new.  So, let’s take a new look at Spring, shall we? The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning. Ugggh.  But, let's talk about the birds and the bees instead...the part of the story that happens...

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Have you heard about The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family or the Tax Payer Protection Pledge?  Our politicians are taking all sorts of promises to lobby groups with specific agendas. Hmmm?

In the news this week is the fact that anti-tax advocate and powerful lobbyist, Grover Norquist, has convinced politicians to pledge NEVER to raise taxes.  Never ever ever.  They can't close tax loopholes or eliminate tax subsidies - ever.  They can't even lower overall tax rates and simplify the tax code, if that means the government can possibly earn more money by doing so?!  Politicians fear the rath of Grover who seems to be the most influencial man in Washington right now, at least on Capitol Hill.  He freaks our politicos out by reminding them what happened to George H. Bush after he broke his "no new taxes" promise.  According to his Americans For Tax Reform website, "In the 112 Congress, 236 House members and 41 Senators have taken the pledge. On the state level, 13 governors and 1249 state legislators have taken the pledge."

Well, never fear, America's moms are here - Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike - to remind our elected officials that they ALL took the pledge of alligiance to the flag of the United States of America and they work for us!  And, we have more "friends" than Grover (he has 12,151 "likes" on facebook and O-MAMAs have 17,000+ which translate to more votes), so we would appreciate it if our politicians defer to their constituents and their #1 pledge.  If they decide to vote against a balanced approach to raising the debt ceiling and a $4 trillion deficit reduction plan, super, but we hope they do it because that is what our country needs, not because it's what Grover wants.

This should not be a democratic or a Republican issue - this should be a national issue about power in politics.

MOMism:  "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America."  Our KID-Os know one pledge...we want to remind our elected leaders that they should only take one pledge, too - the pledge of allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,

and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

They should have thought about the deficit when they got us into two wars without funding them. When has this country ever gone to war without asking the citizens to help pay for it? Norquist, and his Republican groupies in Congress, are just plain NUTS. And stupid. And (I go out on a limb here and use one of their favorites) un-American for putting themselves, bankers, big business, and the defeat of anything President Obama favors, ahead of our people and our country.

I am a lifelong Republican and do not want ANY tax hikes, however, I do not think closing tax loopholes and eliminating unnecessary subsidies are tax increases. If we lowered overall rates, and got rid of all that waste, it would simplify our tax code, which I thought Republicans supported? I am fed up!!!

And, I DO NOT want any elected official to sign a pledge that his/her constituency has not condoned. Our politicians should be beholden to THE PEOPLE, not one person - otherwise, that is not democracy?!

The only VOW our politicians should take is to their spouse, the only PLEDGE should be to the flag and the only OATH should be to the office they hold. Silliness.

Everybody wants clean air and water, is willing to use the roads, the libraries, the schools, be protected by the military and the police, etc, but then complain about paying taxes. I am against wars, but I still have to pay for them, like it or not. If we want the government to do anything, we have to be willing to pay for it.
