FEATHERING OUR NESTS: O-MAMA’s Perspective on SPRING CLEANING

Spring is in the air.  The birds and the bees are flitting around doing their thing…nature abounds.  The birds are feathering their nests and laying their eggs, while the bees are busy pollinating every flower in the garden.  The air is crisp and clean.  Chirping and buzzing fills the air.

Everything seems fresh and new.  So, let’s take a new look at Spring, shall we? The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning. Ugggh.  But, let's talk about the birds and the bees instead...the part of the story that happens...

MURPHY'S LAW: New Gay Military Policy

According to the Gay America blog, a new compromise to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy for gay soldiers is being discussed in Congress.  Senator Patrick Murphy (D-PA) and 192 law makers co-sponsored the legislation to repeal the policy, which will be considered on the floor of Congress Thursday or Friday.  Apparently, the House and Senate will pass legislation this year, after specific criteria are met.  The new policy has to meet the “standards of military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion and recruiting and retention.”  First, the Secretary of Defense must receive the military study being conducted on the implications of repealing the bill.  Then, the President, Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs have to review the study and the Department of Defense needs to make new policies before implementing the repeal. Until then, the current policy will remain in tact.

MOMism:”Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”  Oftentimes when you least expect it, you need to expect it!  Moms take into consideration all the things that could go wrong, so we can have a back up plan (packing extra clothes in case of an explosion) or a consequence at the ready (you do x, y, z, you will lose a priviledge) if things do go awry.  Murphy's law forces us to prepare for all options, so we can keep our kids safe and secure.  Although it's good to change things up sometimes, it's important to take your time to cover all your bases...military bases...because it's better to be safe, than sorry.

I think if someone wants to defend our country it shouldn't matter what their race or sexual orientation is...how funny we stand up for others when their freedom is at stake, but we won't allow our own soldiers the freedom to be their true selves!

I served in the Army from 86 to 94 and served with a few soldiers I knew were gay. I had one NCO who I would have followed to hell and back because I knew he would get us home safely. I have known some real hetero sexual people who should have never made it past basic training. In the military a soldier needs to be able to have FULL confidence in his/her leader. There are those who are close minded enough to not believe a gay leader is any good. I really wish someones sexual orientation was not a qualifying point to serve a nation. To be honest with you I am afraid there will be retaliations against any openly gay soldier.
