"The Voice of Reason": Opinionated MAMA's Perspective on the SOCIAL & POLITICAL ISSUES of Our Times

Originally posted 9/12/09, given the political climate, we thought our very first opinion piece was relevant this week:  “Listen to your mother!” We've all heard it a million times....it's an effective reminder that makes kids sit up a little straighter and pay attention.  Yep, it's true, kids need constant reminders on how to behave, but unfortunately, the grown ups in our country need to be reminded, too.  You know, ”mind your manners,” “clean up your own mess,” “don’t be a poor sport” and on and on.  So, who better to...

MAMA GRIZZLY: Palin Promotes Political PAC

Sarah Palin, in conjunction with her political action committee SarahPAC, released her committee’s first YouTube video Thursday morning. Sure to go viral in social media, the message warns Washington of a stampede of pink elephants crossing the line on Nov. 2nd  2010.  Palin describes a “mom awakening in the past year and a half” because moms “just know when something’s wrong."   She says that American women are concerned about their children’s futures and are unhappy with the country’s “fundamental transformation,” metaphorically akin to the “mama grizzlies that rise up on their hind legs when somebody’s coming to attack their cubs.”

MOMism: "I am woman hear me roar!" Our KID-Os know that their O-MAMAs will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, it’s in our genes.  The instinct that moms have to protect the vulnerable does not compare to any other group out there.

Sarah Palin has taken this fundamental truth of nature, and plugged it as a campaign slogan to rally female candidates, as well as voters.  She aims to use mothering imagery to attract support of many who may not otherwise be involved in the political process.  Sarah Palin said “If you thought pit bulls were tough, don’t mess with the mama grizzlies.”

Regardless if O-MAMAs agree or disagree with Mrs. Palin's politics, she proves our point: moms are shaping the future of our country.  We all want to keep our children safe and promote the type of future that we want for them. What mama bears say is critical.  What mamas do about it though is what separates a "mama grizzly" from the rest of the animal kingdom...don't stand in her way or she'll rip your throat out.  Love her or hate her, either way, she makes MAMAs roar!

I don't think Palin is going to "go away". Who knows if she will run for national office in 2012 or further on. She's got a fantastic ability to make you like her and she's like a real person unlike so many who run for office. I think her stepping down as Gov. was a mistake...she should have finished her term, but she is expanding her experiences and ALREADY has more governing experience than some presidents I could mention...

This is why I love O-MAMA. Such great conversations--whether you are for or against! And I love that O-MAMA doesn't try to form our opinions for us. They give the facts and some great MOMisms to get the convo started. THANK YOU!

Why is Sarah Palin so frustrating? Maybe she is like the popular girl in high school? She is really pretty, sugary sweet to your face and popular with the boys, but she copies someone else's homework and gets a B+. When asked why she didn't study, she just giggles. She is the Homecoming Queen. Then, there is a girl who is a little awkward, kind of shy and the boy she has a huge crush on doesn't even know she exists. She studies all the time and gets straight As. When asked why she works so hard, she passionately defends her thirst for facts. She is the weird girl. Hmmm...politics is kind of like high school. Frustrating.

I like her point of view in some cases :) Im grateful for her boldness, honesty, and willingness to put herself out there for what she believes will better our nation. I dont mind the grizzly comparison - I really dont care for animal analogies but understand her point. I want to see our citizens take over their lives and not ask the gov't (or give them the permission) to take any part of our lives over. Let the gov't take care of our roads and protection services (police, military, etc) - stay out of our personal choices and liberties. This is our country!

I agree. I think she's probably a great gal. I worry that she isn't up to the task of leading our country though...that being said, I agree with your points about government control. There needs to be a better balance...common sense regulation that protects the public, but doesn't stifle business. And, I think government should stay out of our personal business (sexuality, religion, etc.), too! Just my opinion fellow pink elephants!

I don't think Palin is really honest — after all, she IS a politician — but I do agree with you, Belle, that there ARE certain things the government needs to do for us, and other things they need to stay out of. I'm afraid Palin would allow government to interfere with some of our personal choices when she has religious differences with them.

my opinion is that Sarah will say or do anything to make a buck....Funny how she uses animals (pit bulls, grisslies)as metaphors when convenient but shoots animals from helicopters or stands in front of live turkeys being ground to a pulp to give a new conference. Sarah needs to get educated and present her point of view using facts and without demonizing people with other ideas. She is an attractive woman, but her lack of maturity or education is what makes many people not take her seriously. She revels in her ignorance and attracts others who are also proud of that short coming....

Isn't it ironic that someone who is so anti-environment would compare herself to an animal on the verge of extinction because its habitat is melting away.

Absolutely ridiculous. And, unfortunately, she doesn't protect her cubs...she parades them around to promote herself. Sad, really.

that's the truth.... She paraded her pregnant daughter around while campaigning for VP and then was surprised that people noticed (and commented on)the situation. She used her young son as a prop for sympathy as well. Why else why she have dragged them all over the coutry with her. SHe sould have been better served (I think John McCain would agree now) staying home, caring for her family and finishing her term as governor of Alaska. Her appetite for fame and $$ knows no bounds....

What seems sad to me is the way you perceive and criticize. It is quite judgmental to say these things - its quite presumptuous to say you know her motives when truly you cannot know.

You are correct Belle. We don't know her motives and we shouldn't judge that...actions speak louder than words...and we have to hold our elected officials accountable for what they DO. Sarah Palin is simply a pundit, she doesn't hold an elected office anymore, and her words are supposed to get everyone riled up...that's what she gets paid to do. She's doing her job and she's really good at it!

I agree - it probably would have been best for her family if she had stayed in AK and taken care of them, kept her daughter out of the spotlight. But thats their decision - it leaves a lot of room for judgement though. I dont think she paraded her son around for sympathy - someone who has a special needs child is not parading them around by doing their job with kid in arms. No, I dont think she could run the country. I would have been fine with her as VP but not with McCain.

Hi momof3 - Yes, I am not sure what she is doing besides being a voice for a lot of people who do not want to see the country "fundamentally transformed" the way Obama is going. Im glad McCain wasnt elected either. The good Obama has brought is that people will not stand for politicians just doing what they want anymore. I have been very disappointed with the republicans and dems for several years (around 20 years) and am glad that our country is at the point where we are watching and taking note of what they are doing with our money - I hope in years to come that we can really make change - change them out of office - the incumbents are in trouble for the next few elections. I hope everyone is carefully looking into the way the current politicians have been voting as well as what the newbies are representing. I want people who actually are transparent - Im tired of all the empty words and lame hype - show me some substance for cryin out loud! And stick with the goodness and God that our country was founded upon. You dont like it move somewhere else - this is the USA. We are tolerant and loving and good (many of us anyway :P) and we happen to have a Christian culture.

Grizzly bears have tiny brains and act on instinct. Sometimes they kill humans just for being in the same place they are at the same time. I tried to teach my child to live in the world he found himself in. That takes thought and sometimes you have to let your child take little hits and bumps. You'll be there to comfort him and explain why things happened they way did. And do we really want to teach our children that if we don't like you we are going to rip your throat out?

How true indeed! Palin has shown Alaskans that she is a vindictive and oportunistic person who behaves like a character in a soap opera.... She needs to progress bebyond a high school mentality.

I love how O-MAMA frames the issues...I've re-read this MOMism about 10 times trying to read between the lines, but it really leaves it open to our OPINIONS. Whether or not we are a "mama grizzly" another kind of "mama bear" or a human being. I am a human MAMA and I think it's my responsibility to take care of my kids, protect and nurture them. I think Sarah Palin is a voice in American politics because we let her...just tune her out, then maybe she'll go away. She can write books...or do a million other things...she just can't run our country! She doesn't even know basic geography or diplomacy. YIKES MAMA!

I am on the same page as you Tired Mama except for one thing. We cannot afford to simply hope she will go away. I think on issues such as Palin raises as well as the wars in which we find ourselves for no discernible reason we must speak out and become activists. So many things from the last few years remind me of Germany in the early 1940s -- economic depression, riswhen people started pe in unemployment, emerging leaders who appealed to the lowest common denominator of society, vitriolic and incendiary rhetoric meant to inflame the masses....and we all know how that turned out.... I am not sure how to proceed, but I am sure that we the people must make our will clear.

I think if we ALL tuned her out, she would become insignificant. But, you are right, if she runs for something, GOD help us all...then, I agree, this passive mom will turn into an activist mom, so she doesn't get voted into something that can impact my life...or the lives of my children. We the people need to stay engaged in the issues...educate ourselves and the people we know and love. This is not a time for us to "pretend" that we get it anymore...it is time for serious people, with serious solutions, run our country. We get the government we vote in...we need to keep moving our country in the right direction.

I have to agree that this seems strangely like the 30s where the media is in control and people are like little lemmings just taking the bait and following one another off a cliff. I like to watch a couple news organizations and meet somewhere in the middle - Fox is right - MSNBC & CNN are left but in between is probably fairly close to reality. I am shocked at the bias on both sides because journalism (I thought) used to be neutral. Now they all have an agenda. So I have to decide for myself what resonates as truth and what is best for our country. Our country is the most remarkable (not perfect by any means) country I have had the pleasure of living in and I do not wish to mimic the European system in any way (healthcare is extremely lacking - we have it much better now than we will if the obamacare actually goes into effect - esp with the fact that our country cant afford it). I refuse to let this country push one another into a socialist society where people think they have the "right" to all kinds of privileges without paying a cent or working hard for it. And I will not stand for someone taking from others who do work hard to give to those who just want to collect a check and do nothing. (That does not include people who are in the unfortunate position of having lost their jobs and are actively looking - although at some point youve got to take the job that sucks until you can get the one you really want). Ok, Im trailing on to other issues. I love my fellow citizens and want to see us thrive and not have the govt telling us what to do - let us make our decisions and help others in need (by choice not by govt forced programs). I'll stop there for now :)
