LUCKY LABOR: The Jobs Bill

Good news for some unemployed workers who may have the luck of the jobs bill to thank for going back to work.  The Senate passed a jobs promoting bill Wednesday that will go back to the House for approval next.  The bill, approved 70-28, provides tax incentives to companies that hire unemployed workers, and extends funding for highway projects.  The jobs bill is a big deal because it takes effect immediately, benefits small businesses and could spur 250,000 new jobs.  The bill’s passing is a big win for the Obama camp for sure, but also has support from Republicans like Senate newcomer Scott Brown.    Not all Republicans are in agreement, though.  Those opposing the bill, like Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, say that increasing the deficit by funding highway programs will leave debt for the next generation.   Small business wins with the tax incentive assuming they need more labor.  Workers luck out by getting to go back to work. Highways get built, which is lucky for those of us who drive on them, but the pot of gold that pays for the projects comes from our taxes.  Mixed reviews on the jobs bill:  Is it leprechaun tricky stuff or a stroke of luck for all?  Let us know what you think on the Money Hot Button.

We teach our kids that, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”  Having a good work ethic is an important thing for us all.  (1) Encourage kids to learn the value of work by giving them chores at home to do.  This is their first opportunity to work and they can contribute with small “jobs” and know how good it feels to do work.  (2) Teach them to be prepared by giving them some “job skills.”  Any job they can learn how to do as a child will give them confidence in their ability to learn bigger jobs as an adult.
