O-mama - Opinionated Moms

This Kid-O is on a path to changing the world.  Gretchen knows how important it is to become aware of the issues that impact our nation. 

She says,” I am going to be able to vote in the next election…I know how important it is to 'have a voice' and vote for what I believe in, that is why I am trying to educate myself by listening to what the candidates have to say, so I can help choose a president who will give America a better future.”  A big responsibility!  She had a remarkable experience as a member of the Junior State of America (JSA) club.  The program enables high school students who are interested in politics and foreign affairs to improve their public speaking and leadership skills.  Gretchen explains that her involvement has been life changing.  “Once I joined JSA I quickly learned that it was so much more than just having fun with friends! I became aware of current events and how they affect the world.  We also debated controversial topics, which helped me become not only a better speaker but gave me a better understanding of opposing views on the issues,” she says. She wants to become a journalist or go into public relations after college, where she can use her leadership, speaking and listening skills to good use. 

Gretchen wants to be a leader and finds inspiration from adults in her life.  She says, “I think the most important characteristic of a great leader is the ability to listen. The next important thing would be the ability to take action, make a plan, and have a powerful drive to complete any task.”  Of course, she is inspired by her own MAMA, who taught her that she is, “capable of anything I set my mind to and that nothing I dream is impossible.”

Gretchen is going off to college with a clear vision of whom she is and what she wants to accomplish.  She says, “Gandhi once said ‘be the change you wish to see in the world’, this quote is popular and is used often, but not many people actually follow it. I want to be the one who follows it by pursuing my dreams, helping others, and enjoying every moment along the way.” Gretchen is a Kid-O, who is bound and determined to change the world!
