Katie Stagliano is a Kid-O changing the world! This sixth-grader from Summerville, S.C., loves to garden, and, at age 9, grew a 40 lb cabbage which was used to feed 275 people at a soup kitchen. She says that this experience “inspired her to help others,” by starting a garden at her school. She and her classmates were given a football field sized piece of land to grow food for the homeless. Her efforts have expanded to help those in need through food donations, as well as has enabled others to grow their own veggies.
Through this first experience, she learned an important lesson: that homeless families look like everyone’s families. We’re all the same and want the same things. Katie got to know those she helped, and they became her new friends. The gardens that Katie has started over the past two years have yielded thousands of pounds of produce for people in need.
She has written a book called Katie’s Cabbage to inspire others to grow crops for themselves and others. And, her website Katies Krops sends this simple mission…that we can all help those in need, because,”it only takes a seed.”
If an 11-year-old can do it…so can we. Katie wants other kids to know that they, “can do anything they put their minds to…and to not give up on their dreams” Find out how you can get involved by donating to Katie’s Krops, or if you want to start your own garden, apply for a grant from Katie’s Crops at http://www.katieskrops.com.

Thank you for providing a breath of fresh air today. This article was exactly what I needed to read to restore my hope among all the despair. There is so much goodness in our communities and in the spirit of our children.on 01/10/11Reply
- I couldn't agree more...kids like this make me feel all warm and fuzzy. There is a nation of these type of children among us and we have to remain hopeful that they outnumber the crazies...especially in a week like this!on 01/12/11Reply

Thank you Stacey - it was great talking to you and sharing our morning cry together! (-: We are so proud of Katie, what a fantastic KID-O. I can't wait to share her story and website with my kids tonight. What an inspiration she is...thank you for encouraging her to follow her dreams and to have an "I can" attitude, instead of an "I can't"...if our kids believe it, then they can do it!!! Thanks MAMA for raising a great KID-O.on 01/10/11Reply
