THE STATE OF OUR UNION: Opinionated MAMA's Perspective on "Keeping It Together"

When the honeymoon is over and the day-to-day grind of real life begins, it takes a lot of hard work to create a healthy, happy...more perfect...union. Whether we are talking about the state of our country or the state of our own marriage and family, the message is the same. We need to take time to evaluate what is working, what isn’t and figure out how to adjust accordingly. If we are in a dysfunctional relationship it is hard to deal with any problems, big or small. Never mind an economic crisis, healthcare crisis,...

IT'S AN HONOR:MLK Rallies

Free speech was alive and well in Washington, D.C. as two different public figures held simultaneous rallies.  Conservative TV host Glen Beck held a “Restoring Honor” rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr’s historic “I Have a Dream “ speech. The rally was attended by tens of thousands and raised more than $5 million dollars for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. On the event website it states: "This non-political event that pays tribute to America’s service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor." Also in attendance was Alveda King, King’s niece, and Sarah Palin. Beck made a speech saying, “One man can change to world…that man or woman is you. You make the difference.”

The Reverend Al Sharpton led a simultaneous rally march past the Lincoln memorial in a smaller event to commemorate the message of Dr. King to ensure equality under law for all Americans. "They have a right to rally. But what they don't have the right do is distort what Dr. King's dream was about," the Rev. Al Sharpton declared.

MOMism:”You make the difference.” Don’t we know it! Each citizen (and each mom) puts their mark on the trajectory of our nation. We need to take time to teach our kids about the brave Americans who act on their convictions, stand up for our freedom - in rhetoric and in defense of the principals of our nation - and shape the future of the country. Thank you to Dr. King and his dream...and to the men and women who fight to defend it. Let them be the example to us all!

We were there among 500,000 people, among the 500,000 were people of all walks of life, young, old, infants, teens, young couples and families! They came in all colors, Black, White and in between! We heard in words and songs the honoring of three wonderful people who represent faith, hope, and charity (the theme of Beck’s T.V. show for this year. In spite of what some said and still say, the entire event was non-political, inspiring and soul-searching. There was no hateful speech, no rioting, no politics, no inappropriate behavior whatsoever! Dr. Alveda King, (the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - she lost both her uncle and father in the civil rights movement) spoke. Dr. King's dream was not distorted, it was honored. Tune in to G. Beck at 5 pm on TV and it will be clear that Dr. King is one of his heroes. And everyone at the rally clapped and cheered and showed nothing but respect for Dr. King, for his dream, for his principles, and for the stand he took. Sarah Palin spoke as mom of a soldier, not as a politician. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by a Boy Scout, and at one point in the three hour event, a man dressed in Scottish kilts and playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipe, was joined by nearly 500,000 people singing Amazing Grace! It was amazing indeed! Besides Glenn Beck, Dr. Alveda King, Sarah Palin, the Boy Scout, singers, and the bagpipe player, the following people were represented on stage: Catholic Priests, Native Americans, Protestant Ministers, Rabbis, and Muslims. They were all there in unity, not necessarily believing with each other on everything, but yet with love and unity. That is what America has been and can be again. That was the reason for the rally. Hate speech, personal attacks, and gossip from all sides of politics and religion will not work if we want to keep America strong. United we will stand; divided we will fall. We must always be open to listen to others, even those we may disagree with. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Granny LaTeDa
