FEATHERING OUR NESTS: O-MAMA’s Perspective on SPRING CLEANING

Spring is in the air.  The birds and the bees are flitting around doing their thing…nature abounds.  The birds are feathering their nests and laying their eggs, while the bees are busy pollinating every flower in the garden.  The air is crisp and clean.  Chirping and buzzing fills the air.

Everything seems fresh and new.  So, let’s take a new look at Spring, shall we? The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning. Ugggh.  But, let's talk about the birds and the bees instead...the part of the story that happens...

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: All US Troops Are Coming Home From Iraq

UPDATE 12/12/11: The remaining troops in Iraq are coming home in three weeks and President Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki held a joint news conference explaining that Iraq will be following it's own interests in making any future decisions

-------------

After a phone call with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Nouri al-Maliki, President Obama announced that ALL of our troops will be out of Iraq by the end of the year. Also, promising that they will be home for the holidays...we're thinking Christmas, not Halloween!? (-: Our combat troops came home last summer and now the rest of our troops are headed home, too. So MAMAS, how do you feel? It's been a 9 year war, we've spent almost a trillion dollars, we've lost 4,469 troops, but we got Saddam Hussein, helped train Iraqi forces and provided support as the country struggles to put together a new government and tolerant secular society. Our mission is finished, so is it mission accomplished?  Iraq wanted us to leave. There are many issues for Iraq to work out and we are leaving with an emboldened Iran, so what should the US role be going forward?  Are there ways to support the fragile country without our boots on the ground?  Please share your opinions MAMAS.

MOMism: "Keep the home fires burning."  Home - just saying it out loud conjures up emotions, but mostly it brings a sense of peace. It's our safe place. Our kids and loved ones have been far far away for too long.  We want their home coming to be celebrated, but more importantly, we want them to feel like they are home - safe and secure surrounded by love.  Let's give our troops a very warm welcome, whether we have a national day of recognition or just make a banner for the front door.  It's the big things and the little things that define the warm comforts of "home."

MAMAS - what do you think our country should do to welcome our troops home?  What are you going to do?

I'm really glad they're leaving Iraq — they shouldn't have been there to begin with — but most will probably just be sent to Afghanistan... and those who do come home will just be out of a job and make the jobs situation worse here. At any rate, those who continue in the armed services, I hope they get to have some quality time with their families before being shipped off again. It was 9 years too long.

I agree. I think Sadam Hussein was a bad guy, but there are lots of bad guys out there. If we wanted to get rid of him, there were other ways to do it - smarter, more efficient ways to do it. We sacrificed so much to give Iraqi's freedom. Well, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. They are free from Sadam and they have asked us to leave, so now their destiny is up to them.
