"The Voice of Reason": Opinionated MAMA's Perspective on the SOCIAL & POLITICAL ISSUES of Our Times

Originally posted 9/12/09, given the political climate, we thought our very first opinion piece was relevant this week:  “Listen to your mother!” We've all heard it a million times....it's an effective reminder that makes kids sit up a little straighter and pay attention.  Yep, it's true, kids need constant reminders on how to behave, but unfortunately, the grown ups in our country need to be reminded, too.  You know, ”mind your manners,” “clean up your own mess,” “don’t be a poor sport” and on and on.  So, who better to...

FOOT IN MOUTH: RNC Chairman Not In Step With Party Line

Rank and file Republicans continue to call for the resignation of Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Many supporters have excused other political faux pas in the past, however, the most recent gaffe regarding the war in Afghanistan appears to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. Speaking at a fundraiser in Connecticut, Steele said, “This was a war of Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in.” This comment has hit a raw nerve in the party. Republican officials have considered it an affront to the very party that he is intended to represent, and insult to the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they’ve been asked to take on by their elected leaders.

The war in Afghanistan, consistently supported by Republicans, began during the Bush presidency, and continued into the Obama administration, marking the longest war in our country's history. GOP Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina lambasted Michael Steele for the comments, which McCain called "wildly inaccurate" and Graham characterized as "uninformed, unnecessary, unwise, and untimely.”

MOMism: “Follow the leader.”  Our KID-Os love to play follow the leader on the playground, but they only follow the kids they like! As they get older and they have to pick the captain of their baseball team...or cheerleading squad, they select the peers that embody the leadership qualities that are expected and respected. Kids learn early on that there is no "I" in TEAM.  It would be important in this instance to choose a leader that demonstrates good sportsmanship, instills team spirit and knows how to win.

Looks like Michael Steele spoke out of turn again, which not only frustrated colleagues because he wasn't towing the party line, but he also offended the people he is expected to represent, as well as the brave men and women who are serving their country in war time.  Maybe it’s time to find a new “team captain” for the RNC, since it seems to be getting harder to follow the leader.
