"Once a Bully, Always a Bully”: Opinionated MAMA’s perspective on BULLYING

Reposted from 11/10: Meanies have been around since the beginning of time.  The kids who steal your lunch money, taunt you because you aren’t “cool” enough, give you wedgies and swirlies, call you embarrassing names…you know, those guys!  We all know a bully intimately…we were either bullied by someone, we were “friends” with a bully, or we were actually the big bad bully – we might still be?  Relentless teasing at someone else’s expense. Picking on the little guy (or gal).  Good for a laugh. "Sticks & stones may break...

FATTY FATTY 2 BY 4: Overweight Kids Likely To Be Bullied

A recent study published in the journal of Pediatrics says that kids are more likely to be bullied if they are overweight.  Obese children were 65% more likely to be bullied, and overweight kids were 13% more likely, than their normal weight peers.  The study was of children in 3rd to 6th grades.  The results also showed that being socially adept or getting good grades does not mitigate being bullied over weight issues.

MOMism:  “It’s a big problem.”  Childhood obesity is a serious issue, but this is a perfect example of something that mom's can absolutely CHANGE.  Sure, our lives are busy, but remember the days when we had to play outside until dinner...on weekends until the street lights came on?  We need to get our kids off the couch and out in the yard.  Also, dinners need to be quick, but they can be healthy and balanced.  Protein, veggies and a little grainy goodness!  America's moms can impact the future health of our citizens and the expense to our country by simply encouraging our kids to play, play, play and eat right.  Go MAMAS!

Any time I see an obese child I become enraged at the parents. But,usually they are equally obese, and simply don't seem to care. When it is as dangerous to the child's health as it is to his emotional and psychological development, I wish they would finally, officially, put this in the same category as any other kind of abuse, and hold these parents accountable. I make sure to keep my kids HWP, and tell them exactly what is in the foods I refuse to buy, and why they don't get them.

This is so sad, but nothing new. I remember the nerdy kids and the chubby kids being bullied when I was in school. MAMAS, this is something we can absolutely fix!
