FEATHERING OUR NESTS: O-MAMA’s Perspective on SPRING CLEANING

Spring is in the air.  The birds and the bees are flitting around doing their thing…nature abounds.  The birds are feathering their nests and laying their eggs, while the bees are busy pollinating every flower in the garden.  The air is crisp and clean.  Chirping and buzzing fills the air.

Everything seems fresh and new.  So, let’s take a new look at Spring, shall we? The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning. Ugggh.  But, let's talk about the birds and the bees instead...the part of the story that happens...

DON’T ROCK THE BOAT: Italian Ship Goes Down

While watching the news about the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster over the weekend, my daughter asked me, “Where does the captain go if his ship sinks?”  Without hesitation, I responded, “nowhere, honey, the captain goes down with the ship.”  She looked at me and said, “You mean, always? They always stay on the ship while it’s sinking? What would happen if they left the ship?”  I told her that wouldn’t happen, because it’s the captain’s responsibility to stay with the ship and that no captain would abandon his ship.  She didn’t really believe me. Turns out, she had reason not to.

MOMism: “The captain goes down with the ship.” Mr. Italian captain, Francesco Schettino, who ran his ship aground while trying to show off, was in fact, one of the first to “abandon ship.” So, we all get to explain to our kids that, sometimes captains like Sully Sullenberger (who three years ago this weekend led the passengers on board his airplane to safety, after ditching in the Hudson river)understand the moral code of commanding a vessel, while other captains rock the boat, tip it over, and haul ass.  Nice. Let this be a lesson in leadership. In life, our kids will be tested, so how do we teach them to step up when their boat gets rocked?

    What an embarrassment to Costa Concordia, Carnival Cruise Lines and Italy, to have a man like Schettino at the helm. The question is: authorities must have known he was of poor quality and low integrity. Why did they continue his employ? Whose brother-in-law is he?

      And an embarrassment to Schettino's MAMA! Shame on him. Any decent person helps their fellow man in a crisis, not to mention the CAPTAIN of a sinking ship?! Absurd.
