BAILOUT: Iran Hiker Coming Home

UPDATE: The 2 remaining American hikers have been released from an Iranian prison and are on their way home, too!  US paid $1 million bail.

Originally posted 9/14/10:  One of the American hikers who was arrested in Iran a year ago, Sarah Shourd, was released and is on her way to Oman to meet her mother.  The other two detained hikers, however, could be facing trial.  Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal are being accused of espionage.  Tehran’s chief prosecutor Abbas Jafar Dowlatabadi says that, “The suspects did not confess, but we have enough reasons in hand for their spying charges.”  He elaborated by saying that the two had “equipment and documents and received training.”  Shourd’s attorney told the Associated Press that she was,”happy, and even the two male prisoners were glad about Sarah’s freedom.  But Sarah had expected all three of them to be released.”

MOMism: The price of freedom.  Freedom comes at a price in many places in the world - but freedom is one of our inalienable rights as Americans.  We teach our kids to value their freedoms, but that they come with responsibility.  Other countries, such as Iran, have a different standard for their citizens.  It is a difficult lesson that these American kids learned…being held in a foreign prison for inadvertently crossing the line into Iran.  One of the families is going to pay, literally, for their child to be free...and the others, will pay with more grief and anxiety while they wait to find out the price put on their children's lives.
