- ARE THE KIDS ALRIGHT?: Immigration Challenges 14th Amendment

Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and Senator John Kyl (R-AZ), are urging Congress to hold hearings on the validity of the 14th Amendment, and it’s relationship to current Immigration legislation. The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868 to ensure that states could not deny citizenship to former slaves. It states….
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
Critics claim that this Amendment has been misinterpreted to provide carte-blanche citizenship to anyone born in the United States, even if their parents are here illegally. The argument of “birthright” has become the most recent debate involving Immigration legislation.
MOMism: “Leave the kids out of it.” When it comes to marital squabbles...or immigration reform...the same is true: kids are not the problem. They may be the result of a bad relationship, or bad timing, but they are not to blame for the issues at hand. They are simply the innocents who get caught in the middle because of their parents' actions.
Grown ups need to address the various illegal immigration-related problems and fix them:
• track visitors who have over-stayed Visas
• secure the borders
• crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers
• create national i.d. program
• curb demand for illegal goods from Mexico
...and leave the kids out of it!

This is just ridiculous. Of course the whole idea of "anchor babies" is heinous. There are laws against criminals profiting from their crimes. Boiled down, means that just because ma and/or pa are crooked enough to enter the country illegally, they most certainly should not be rewarded for getting away with their crimes by being able to use their kids' to get American citizenship and benefits. I just posted on an educational thread how these illegals are destroying our educational system, but they are also doing just as much damage to our health care system. Their babies, their problem. Would you expect your neighbor to support your kid just because you broke into their house? Seriously, how stupid is this whole idea to begin with? What kind of moron can't see that you do NOT allow criminals to benefit from their crimes, you PUNISH them for it.on 08/26/10Reply

The babies are not just PART of the problem. Remember, we often have to pay for health care & education for those babies. PLUS it gives the parents a reason to stay...citizenship for their children.on 08/03/10Reply
- None of our Presidents..since Truman...have enforced immigration law. The Supreme Court will uphold the federal government's role but how are the states to protect themselves from illegal immigrant influx?on 09/14/10Reply
- Well, you may be right...I haven't read about which presidents did and did not enforce immigration laws, but until recently (last 30 years) it wasn't a major issue with illegals gaining entry. The number turned away due to illness was huge, now there is no "Ellis Island" where most immigrants pass through. The states SHOULD have the right to protect themselves and use their national guard troops/state milita to do so.on 09/14/10Reply

- There is NO evidence of "baby dropping"! That is simply propoganda used by the same political hacks who claim that crime has increased in border states (which is a lie - its actually dropped every year over the last 4 years)! I actually know and have friends that are illegal, and I can tell you this - they are here because the situation in Mexico is becoming more and more dangerous and they simply want to raise their kids in a safe place where hangings, assasinations, etc., are not the norm. - More lies. The crime rate in AZ is down, not up. D-O-W-N. So, why do we always need a boogie man to blame for our problems? The GOP is so good at creating "the bad guy" so we don't need to take responsibility for the messes we make. Border security is a problem. Mexican crime syndicate is a problem. Illegal immigration is a problem. - Thank you for the links!! FACTS!! I love them!! We all have a choice.. give in to the hyperbole and fear-mongering, or we can use critical thinking skills: look things up, find out the truth, and take a deep breath! Yes, all those things are problems.. and neither side of the aisle wants to tackle them, but the right does want to use them as a tool to scare people into voting for them. They claim the Dems dont want to tackle illegal immigration, when they dont want to either!! They all need to do their jobs and tackle these issues, and they need to stop the lies, misinformation, and manipulations!!!on 08/03/10Reply
- O.k. girls, I read the links...I'm pausing...I'm pondering...I just want people to follow the rules. Not get rewarded if you break them. And, do the right thing. For pete sake, why is it so hard for our politicians to lay out the facts and let us form educated opinions? It's exhausting. - The "anchor babies" definitely become a problem rather than just part of one. They are granted instant citizenship and therefore the parent are-sort-of-allowed-to-stay-to-raise-their-kids. And many,(but not all) are supported by government programs, health care, food stamps etc (don't forget education) AND many of them grow up in little conclaves where they are more Mexican citizens than American citizens (again, not all)on 08/03/10Reply
