- AMERICANS IN ACTION: Volunteerism On The Rise In US
-
A new federal report shows that Americans spent 100 million more hours helping their communities last year. The number of people getting involved increased to 63.4 million, while volunteer rates of women jumped by a staggering 1.2 million alone. This reflects the biggest increase in volunteers in a single year since 2003. In part, the increase in volunteerism may be attributed to President Obama’s attempt to bolster national service projects through "United We Serve," a nationwide service initiative to get people involved in volunteering. Most volunteers served through their religious organizations and community groups.
MOMism “Practice what you preach.” OMAMAs teach their kids about the importance of making a difference in the world. But what better way to teach than by example? Make a pledge to join the 63 million Americans who are already volunteering in their communities, and show your kids how to be part of the solution.

I think this is GREAT! I also think it is awesome how Disney was doing that Family Volunteer Day. I know several families that participated in this. :o) There are so many things you can volunteer in. When I was in college, I volunteered for Meals on Wheels and found it to be such a rewarding experience. Hopefully down the line when I am in a better position, I would like to start volunteering again.on 06/21/10Reply

This rise may also be attributed to the staggering unemployment rate. More people have more time because they are out of work. If this is the case it is wonderful they are using the extra time to give to others. Whatever the reason, hopefully this season of giving will continue and grow.on 06/16/10Reply
