I think Scott Walker is right on. The display of those fools in Wisconsin was disgusting. I cannot believe the people that belong to unions have not realized they are getting screwed too. Years ago in the 60's my husband belonged to the Teamster's Union. It was great then but like any organization u let too big in comes money, greed and power. They do not care about the people because they are too busy lining their pockets with the little peoples money, speilling millions more on lobbiests but u can bet it is not for the benefit of the people. Now, if any of u really want to be fair why should people belonging to the union have those pension plans and great perks when in fact all of us really are paying for it. If they want to be a pawn to those crooks in the union then let them bankroll it all and leave the private sector and taxpayers out of it. Oh no, they won't do that cuz they want it all. Trumpka is the biggest crook there is and people listen to that thug. Unbelievable. People need to think through and research things for themselves instead of just going along. Collective bargaining is bull. It is not the end of the world and the leaders in the union make the members think "oh no, it is all over if we lose collective bargaining". Yeah right it is all over for the big wigs so they no longer can rob the members. How do all of u members like all your money being spent on these BS politics and u have no say in their game. But yet, we have the little SEIU working in the service industry along with many others making minimum wage and the union making them think they are getting a helluva deal with the benefits. You all should sit down and really ask yourselves, what am I getting for paying union dues and working for minimum wage. Gee shouldn't the union if they really cared about their members want to make sure the people on the lower rungs of the ladder get a fair wage because you can bet none of them have tried to make it on minimum wage which is impossible and they don't care. The unions idea of collective bargaining is to be able to keep the power. It is impossible to have the retirement plans that retirees have anymore. They, like I said are not funded by just the union people it is funded by all of us. And again, keep it all but u need to fund it all by the thugs at the top and the members if u want to fall in that trap because even if it was funded by only the members the money would not be there at the end because the crooks are too busy spending it now and making back room deals all the time. I just would suggest to you who belong to members really rethink your position and don't follow the crowd mentality. Our country is in very serious trouble because of our hugh financial debt and we are all going to have to sacrifice if we want out country to be the exception. If any of you listen to Obama and have not watched how much more he has run our country into debt and still wants to spend more money and the dangers he has presented while in office needs to be removed. If this fool gets reelected I have no sympathy for society because u can never believe what any politican says but you certainly can judge them by their actions and Obama's actions have hurt this nation considerably. American people never forget and they remember when a president really screws up but the thing that sticks with me I will never forget is when he had Netanyahu come over from Israel who has been our close allie forever. Obama basically ignored him, no state dinner was held for Israel unlike China who is not our friend and just left Netanyahu sitting while Obama went and had dinner with Michelle. He so showed his hand then and his true inners as in he does not like Israel, is pro palestinian and goes to pro palestinian meetings in this country. And I am sure none of us have forgotten the apology tour he took when he was first elected. Instead of praising America and the wonderful things she has done, he put her down. That tour to me was almost anti american and he is weak and could not lead a horse to water. The only way he suckers people in is they think he has a great smile, laid back and he is counting on that. He is no better than a con or a smooth talking salesman but 100x more dangerous. All u have to do is loog around at the gas prices, food prices and everything else. Obama has stated he thinks we should pay at least five or six dollars for gas and he thinks that will make the american people go out and buy those stupid hybrid cars HE thinks we should and was on TV TELLING people to sell their trucks, SUVS and all our cars cuz no matter what he was going to push his alternative energy through which is not even there technologically but he doesn't care cuz he is in bed with all those fools. We use gas Obama, we are not going to sell our vehicles, u are not a King but u like to dictate and would love if u were the dictator of this country cuz your whole background is that of a Muslim and u did not spend that much time in this country as a child, u were taught radical left since u were a kid despite your denials and it is all there people and they are facts if you choose to read them. I was a long time dem until i figured out it had been hijacked by socialists and Obama is just another piece of the anti american puzzle that the radical left has been trying to do to america as far back as i can remember so the next time u vote i hope u make sure u know who u r voting for cuz this fool should never have been president and has caused our country so much harm and all these things u see now ie gas, food, etc are by design. When he gets out there and says all the time, I want everybody to have the american dream so lets take all the rich peoples money and share with evryone. Wrong, the rich pay the most taxes now anyway but I could use one of obama's appts like the head of GE in charge of jobs and oh wow GE did not pay a dime of income tax to the Feds. Wonder why he isn't talking about that. Because he is getting a piece of the pie. He is wishy washy, contradicts himself constantly and never does anything fo rthis country. His town halls make me sick cuz he is phoney. He only has people in there cuz they are screened that are pro obama and if u have ever noticed he rarely has any press conferences cuz he will never answer the hard questions because the word "honest" is not in his vocabulary or dictionary. I tell u people be careful. Here is just a suble thing that parents may not even be aware of but I was going through my son's records management text that he is taking in college. As I was double checking for my son I notice in numbers they used Roman Numerals which is fine but the next one was Arabic which made me sit up and notice and then another word they were using was Quran.. I was thinking what the hell is this crap and even in records management. I called the college cuz I want to know who is in charge of putting this information in these textbooks. I found out and am going to make some noise but any parents out there from K=12 and on u had better start checking everything your kids bring home and see what isin them cuz they are trying to indoctinate our kids and will start from the very youngest so please be aware cuz if u r not it will all be over and u will be left scratching your head what happened. I'd love to hear the President deliver a clear, insightful and positive message on the State of the Union address...for once. The last one was a joke...in fact, most are...too far reaching and full of promises. We want the straight scoop and we want positive. We don't care if Congress people from different parties sit next to each other and hold hands...we get it..y'all are friends, work together and play nice when we're not watching so just stowe it...we just want POTUS to make some sense and sit it back down and get to work, right MAMAs? OCmama yeah...no. The Reagan republicans are NOT dying out, we're back with a vengence and the Tea Party is proof of that. The Republican PARTY is in trouble because of guys like John McCain who don't hold true to the Repblican platform...on 09/24/10Reply
- John McCain wasn't to blame, BUSH was! John McCain was stuck with what Bush left him. John McCain was a deficit hawk, wanted to get rid of all the pork spending, abuses in Washington and special interest influence. He wanted to cut spending and, I think, he would have been great! This is kind of a politics/government thought...but what about the mosque that will in all likelyhood be built at ground zero? (The permission came today to not use the current building as a landmark) Thoughts?on 08/03/10Reply
- Apparently, the Islamic group has owned the building for 27 years or so...and I go back and forth on it. On the one hand, i think, really? Why there? I'm all for freedom of religious expression, but it seems like a slap in the face given the tragic events of 9-11. My gut says pick another place, because it will just fuel more anger. And, then I think what if? What if it could be a peaceful gesture that could actually help with healing and unity in that community? Then, I go back to...it just doesn't feel right. What do you think?on 08/03/10Reply
- Bloomberg made a great speech today about "freedom of religion" and the right of private citizens to own a private piece of property...interesting that the right-wing is all worked up about it, at the same time spouting about the sanctity of our constitution and shredding it simultaneously. Exhausting!on 08/04/10Reply
- I guess count me as a "worked up right-winger" I think that they should not be allowed to build the mosque so close to ground zero. They can build their building in another location. This looks like they are celebrating the fall of the World Trade Center to me...knowing that many people are having issues with this seems mighty "insensitive"on 08/04/10Reply
- Admittedly, I feel the same way you do...I think it is insensitive...and probably not great timing. Just as we are re-building the "freedom tower" all this needs to be added to the mix?! Really? However, sometimes our values are tested...this is one of those tests...and I want the United States to fulfill it's promises to our principles...and our integrity as a nation, even when we personally don't agree. Somehow, I truly believe that if we stand strongly united, we win. When we are divided and deny freedoms to people, we fail. This is a toughy!on 08/04/10Reply
- Those building the mosque may very well be American Muslims. But our government has gone out of it's way to give those who are not citizens a "fair trial" which seems ludicris to me. I just find it hard to believe that there are NO ties to terrorist organizations involved here. Besides Bloomsburg is not exactly a standard Republican...so he doesn't speak for many of us in the Republican party. You are right, this is a difficult issue, because if it was MY faith on the recieving end I would be upset, but at the same time the radicals in my faith (such as the abortion bombers) don't speak for me either, but I can see why people group "right-wingers" together because of people like that. This was full of tangents...sorry my 12 year old is sitting next to me driving me nuts.on 08/05/10Reply
- o.k., ladies, I am so glad you are talking about this because it is making me so MAD. I am mad that this group is trying to make a point, right now, right there. Arrrgggh. And, I am mad that I am so mad about it, because I know they "win" when we freak out and deny freedoms...I do not want the terrorists to win anything...not the physical wars, or the emotional ones. We stand for something in this country and when we fly our flag, we show the world a symbol of freedom and justice for ALL. Even when they are insensitive and trying to push our buttons!on 08/05/10Reply

I don't think Palin is going to "go away". Who knows if she will run for national office in 2012 or further on. She's got a fantastic ability to make you like her and she's like a real person unlike so many who run for office. I think her stepping down as Gov. was a mistake...she should have finished her term, but she is expanding her experiences and ALREADY has more governing experience than some presidents I could mention...on 07/22/10Reply

In an effort to share the whole story, check out the following press release from the Anti-Defamation League. http://www.adl.org/PresRele/IslME_62/5773_62.htm Israel has the right to defend its borders and citizens against terrorism. These people support Hamas and are under the guise of humanitarians. I don't understand the MOMism of "turn the other cheek" but I do agree that it would be great if the violence could stop one day. In order for that to happen - and we all know many peace efforts have been tried over many, many years - we need both sides to come to the table, be honest, be able to control all the groups that are associated with the region and eliminate hatred. It's a tall order, but the fact remains that Israel is still a strong, independent country, and the U.S. needs to step up to the plate and support Israel.on 06/03/10Reply
- Absolutely agree that Israel has the right to protect/defend it's borders and that the US is an unwavering friend and ally. But, where does it all end? Perception is reality sometimes and Israel's actions, whether justified or not, fueled the anger against them from the International community and puts the US in an awkward position. Do you agree or not? So, how do we make sure that weapons aren't being smuggled to Hamas on these humanitarian aid vessels? Can't the UN inspect them before leaving the port and as they are unloading in Gaza? Can't Israeli soldiers be part of that inspection team? There has to be another way...thoughts?on 06/04/10Reply
- This is a fascinating thread...where did you MAMAs net out? How does Israel keep itself safe and let aid get through the blockade?on 07/12/10Reply

First of all look who did the poll! CBS is real neutral! There are lots of us "tea-partiers" who are not male, white, or even republican (although I am two of the three)I have to agree with Red Hat Granny it comes down to a couple of words: Term limits, protecting the constitution, taxes, and (as Superman used to say) truth, justice and the American Way (did I mention term limits!)It has nothing to do with RACE. I could have voted for Condi Rice (although her pro-abortion standpoint is hard to swallow) or Clarence Thomas in a heart beat, or Walter Williams...he's an economist This SHOULD be a post-racial president but he uses race to divide rather than pull us together as a country. It has nothing to do with Obama's skin color, just his politics, beliefs and actionson 05/31/10Reply
- I love that you are a "tea partier" because I really want to understand the movement. I will simply trust you when you say there are "lots of" tea partiers that are not white republicans. And, I appreciate that it is not about Obama's skin color for you, because that just freaks me out...that and the Hitler posters. Yikes! (I do realize there are crazies everywhere and not just limited to those rallies.) But, when it comes to the issues you are concerned about, I'm wondering where the movement was during the Bush administration when I was screaming about term limits, protecting the constitution and taxes (probably for a different reason than you...I didn't want a tax cut because we COULDN'T AFFORD IT). Truth, justice and the American Way went out the window...we created a government that didn't tell us the truth and shredded the constitution, warped our justice system by making it a political extension of the Executive Branch and de-regulated every aspect of big business and disrupted the balance of our economy by privatizing rewards and allowing the public to assume all the risk (from banks, to wars, to big oil...you name it, we screwed it up. Obama is not left with the mess, we all ARE! And, we should be working together to fix the problems...but, I feel like the Republicans are playing political games and not serious about anything, but winning elections (there are a few that do seem serious...Paul Ryan, Tom Coburn, Judd Gregg are some that I actually listen to). We all need to roll up our sleeves and get to work - that is the American Way! Thoughts?on 06/01/10Reply
- Rochesternative...would love to hear what the "true" platform of the Tea Party is, and can you tell me what you think Obama has done to divide rather than pull us together as a country? Very interested to hear your thoughts.on 06/01/10Reply
- The Tea Party platform is pretty simple from what I understand. It wants open dialog between government and the American people, fiscal responsiblity, and strict interpretation of the constitution (rather that the whole "living document" deal) The movement is an attempt to return to the founders in that the government has only a few roles as stated in the Constitution which are to: establish justice, provide domestic tranqulity, provide for the common defense and secure the blessings of liberty (there might be one more...can't remember). The US government has it's fingers in too many pies. The government has gotten far too large. As for what Obama has done to divide us: health care, taking over automobile industry, bailouts, getting rid of don't ask/don't tell, being friends with terrorists (Bill Ayres), Jerimiah Wright, green energy, cancelling all future drilling (okay he hasn't done that completely yet, but just wait.)Fighting the AZ immigration law, refusing to produce basic documentation for his life: ie: birth certificate, college transcripts,BOWING to foreign leaders, Michelle telling us that Obama considers Kenya his home...and this is all in a year and a 1/2! (And I'm sure I've forgotten some) From the begining Obama was upfront in what he wanted to do, which was "remake America" those of us, who because the Tea Party movement were alarmed and tried to get the attention of the "masses". But the message of "Hope and Change" seemed really great (and I'll be the first to admit that Bush (second term) was a real disapointment), and I ONLY voted for McCain because of Palin. Obama has no desire to make America be successful. He is anti-capitalism, pro-government and tries to divide people based on groups (recently he had some ploy to try to pull in hispanic and women voters at some rally) The campaign is over. He has failed to realize that.on 06/01/10Reply
- We (the tea partiers) WERE concerned during the Bush years and we expressed our unhappiness over W's lack of backbone over the bailouts, immigration and a bunch of other items. But Bush didn't seem quite as threatening. Obama makes no secret of his dislike of all things conservative. As for term limits...they are LONG overdue, and it is going to take a whole congress full of tea party elected people OR an referandum by the American People. The republicans are JUST as guilty as playing political games as are democrats which is WHY term limits need to happen. I agree the American people need to put Congress on notice...they work for us NOt the other way around. The Tea Partiers HAVE rolled up their sleeves and it is about time we took our governemtn back! (As for the Hitler pictures, I haven't heard about that, but I appologize on behalf of all of us for that)on 06/01/10Reply
- O.k., I like you Rochester and I LOVE that we get to chat like this, but here's the deal. If you are a "strict constitutionalist" then you can't believe in a woman's right to vote or a black man's right to be more than 3/5 of a person. I believe that the framers created an amazing document that provides a framework for our country because there are things they could never have anticipated. When our country was founded, there was no internet. So, how does our right to privacy impact our personal use of the internet? Well, George W. Bush thought that the federal government had the right to bug our computers and our telephones. Hmmm? How do you feel about that one? So, I respect our Constitution and it's core tenets of balance and justice that lead to equality and freedom for everyone. But, as society, we must respect everyone's freedoms...just because someone is a Christian, doesn't mean they have to support Mormonism, they simply must respect others freedom of religion...just because someone wants to keep and bear arms, doesn't mean I have to like it, but I must respect their freedom to do it (see O-MAMA's opinion on Gay Rights or Guns! totally agree). As far as Obama...I think I need to do a separate post...on 06/02/10Reply
- Obama did not create the messes that are going on, but I think we should all hold him accountable for fixing them! I voted for the man, and he needs all the help he can get to turn this ship around. We were shedding 700,000+ jobs a month, now we are creating 200,000+ jobs a month. This is no small feat and did have to do with the stimulus. Gross right? No one wanted to spend money, but we had to. Bush approved TARP and the first 1/2 disappeared. The second half you can go onto whitehouse.gov and see where every dollar went. We have some left over even. The bank bailouts made everyone nauseous. Everyone. But, the banks are paying us back with interest, so in the end, we've made some money. The auto industry is a mess. I grew up in Detroit and I know it's a mess. But, it is the only thing we make in this country any more...that and houses. So, we have to maintain that industrialized aspect of our economy if for nothing else than WAR. Yep, during WWII my grandma worked on the assembly line helping to build tanks. All of our manufacturing cannot go oversees. We need to retool and revamp our middle class. A lot of the factories that shipped jobs overseas and closed their doors are now making new things...litheum batteries and windmill turbines. It's incredible really and breathing new life into an industry that was decimated. And, p.s., GM has paid back all of their loans - 5 years early! What else? The Wars...separate conversation...taxes - I voted for Obama fully prepared that my taxes would go back to the same rate they were under Clinton. It hasn't happened yet. They are still ridiculously low considering we are in multiple wars, have compounding debt, and a myriad of other problems - education, infrastructure, technology advancement, etc. I cannot believe we allowed every business to DE-regulate or self-regulate all in the name of the almighty dollar. There is a balance. There is a way to protect society and allow business to thrive. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Our oil industries regulated themselves and broke 700+ laws in 3 years, look what happened. Our banking industry got to regulate themselves and they almost took us all down with them. Healthcare...yep, another conversation altogether...kiddies getting hungry...looking forward to hearing from you!on 06/02/10Reply
- When the founders wrote this amazing treatise on freedom, they anticipated that there would be things that they had not anticipated (and all without the benefit of public education!) This is why they gave us the ability to amend the consitution. Additionally, several (I was going to say many, but I am not sure how many) were concerned with women's rights and slavery. At the time the Constitution became law however, the founders had to be more focused on UNITY than trying to right all wrongs at once. And, the Southern States would never have agreed to no slavery, and in general women while not quite property, weren't worth much more (unless you were married to an enlightened man such as Adams) As for the Bush era wiretaps...even though it was painted by the media that "they" were snooping on everyone, the wiretaps were used if Homeland Security had good reason to suspect that there might be a problem. I am pretty boring, I can't imagine that I would do anything that would interest Homeland Security, thus I am not threatened. And I agree, we must respect the freedoms of others...particularily when said freedom is listed in the Consitution. Thus you can believe whatever faith tradition you like and I can deal...but if in exercising your rights you infringe on mine...that is a whole different ball of wax. If you own a gun, fine, so long as you are not using it to threaten me when my grass gets to long or my kids are loud, if you want to be gay, go ahead, but don't expect me to sit quietly by when my kids are being taught in school that it is an acceptable "alternative lifestyle" because THAT infringes on my rights as a taxpayer, parent, Christian...on 06/02/10Reply
- O.k., pretty much agree with a caveat...I think freedom cannot be exclusive. it is not just for people like me...it's for everyone, regardless of their beliefs. That is freedom. Also agree that I don't want anyone to infringe on my rights...and there have to be consequences. You own a gun, groovy. Your gun accidentally shoots someone, then you (not you, but "you") go to jail. You are gay, super. But, I want to understand when and where it would even come up in school?! Sex ed? Hmmmm?on 06/02/10Reply
- Rochester thank you for sharing but I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you. Obama is not devisive, I think he is try to fight for those who have traditionally been unable to fight for themselves. He wants America to live up up to its TRUE promise, which is what I believe our Founding Fathers wanted for this country.on 06/03/10Reply
- Here is where being gay comes up in school, starting in the very youngest grades (depending on the district of course) there are picture books showing families of all variety. 10 years ago it was pretty straightforward (no pun intended) single parent, married parents, grandparent, but in recent years now homosexual couples have been added to these picture books. As teachers, we are supposed to read these and share with the kiddos that yes all families are different. The amount of detail is sometimes left to the teacher, other times given by the district. (mind you this is all in the name of diversity) By the time kids get to 3-5th grade most of them have the general idea boys like girls, girls like boys and some people...well...not so much. But by 6/7th grade the "peer" pressure is on to be accepting of differences and in several districts in my area there are actually CLUBS of gay/straight kids. There was even a situation a year or so ago where a teacher was undergoing a sex change and wanted to dress as a woman until the surgery was complete. Parents were pulling their kids out of his class, and then told that the district would not accomodate the parents by having an alternative teacher (small district only one biology teacher in district) Short and sweet, homosexuality is now a "diversity" that must be recognized in the classroom starting as young as FOUR years old. THIS is how public schools change public opinion. Indoctrination is happening in many areas not just this one (the rainforests are another fine example)on 06/03/10Reply

- good idea, but I don't think it was very successful...only about 300 people showed up and they were all mostly white?! but, I think the Tea Party has made some moves to bring credibility to their movement - kicking out the racist guy and holding this kind of rally (cute name)...they deserve kudos for moving in the right directionon 08/05/10Reply

So much misinformation, so little time so I will just touch on 2 points. If the Republican Party spent us into oblivion(I won't dispute that) how does that excuse BO from ramping up the spending by about a factor of 1 million. Secondly, the important thing is not even whether BO is a muslim or Christian. The important thing to remember is that he sat in the pew of Reverend Wright"s church for 20 years as the good Reverend spewed forth hate speech about our beloved United States, such as the U.S. of KKKA and saying 9/11 was our chickens coming home to roost. Nice.on 03/30/10Reply
- Gotcha. I don't disagree "scrooge001" (funny name, by the way). But, I do realize that sometimes "it takes money to make money"...we have to invest in some fundamentals again or the future of our country will be jeapordized. But, we can certainly debate WHERE the money is going and if we are making the very best investments we can. I have lots of problems with where my tax dollars have been going for the last 9 years (I'm sure a lot we agree on). I do, however, think that we needed to stop the bleeding of the financial markets in order to stabilize our economy. It may not have created as many jobs as we need, but it stopped the bleeding (Bush, by the way, is responsible for the $700+ billion in TARP funds...the first 1/2 spent under Bush, we don't know where it went; the second 1/2 under Obama, you can look up and see every dime...and we are making back profits on the money paid back). The other thing that is important is that the WARS were never on Bush's budgets, they were always covered under "supplementals." Obama has put them on the budget, so we see the fiscal cost of the Wars. As far as Rev. Wright is concerned...I agree. He's an angry man, whether justified or not, he's angry. However, I have to say that Sarah Palin's church is a little scary and angry, too. (Have you seen the youtube videos?) So, those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!on 03/31/10Reply
- Great name, scrooge. I agree with you on the spending deal. Maybe a more appropriate momism to get the Rep. message out is "If you don't have it, don't spend it." We're in big financial trouble and, no matter what caused it...it is what it is. What's with the SPENDING? California is doing it as a state, we are doing it as a country, and guess what? The American people got in the bad habit of living on credit and overextending as well. Well, that's gotta change..which is what the people are raging about. Talk about chickens coming home to roost.on 03/31/10Reply

Not really shocking that Republicans are accusing Obama of trying to turn us into a socialist state. After saying his health care bill intends to kill your Grandmother, that is pretty tame stuff.on 03/04/10Reply
- My problem is that I fear for our country when people believe this crazy talk. Why in the world would we believe that ANYONE would be trying to turn the USA into a socialist state? What would be the reason for doing that? We are a country that balances private business and entities with public options in every realm of our society (education, transportation, services, etc.) -- you don't HAVE to go to public school, it's an option...you don't HAVE to use the bus, it's an option...you don't HAVE to mail a letter, it's an option. It's silly really to limit our options, choices and competition because that it what make our economy strong. Recently, however, our private businesses have interwined themselves into areas of the economy they had no business having access to (hmmm....can you say common sense regulation?) and thier failure sent shock waves through our economy. Isn't it clear to everyone, that we need to fix these systemic problems and build a stable economy instead of calling our president names? We are all in this together. Not because we're socialists, but because we are Americans.on 03/07/10Reply
- I think you are asking very logical and rational questions. Why in the world would any rational person want to nationalize all our basic industries like banking, automotive and insurances? The problem is that accusing politicians of wanting to do that is very effective. As a liberal Democrat, my take is the Republicans have decided it makes very good political sense for them to oppose any legislation supported by the Democrats. If they can not stop the legislation and it is effective, they can always say it would have worked much better if they had just had the opportunity to contribute to it. If it passes and is not effective, that is the best option for them because they will then have a powerful issue to use during election races. If they can block the legislation they will be able to campaign as someone who protected us from the terrible Democrats. Republicans of course would be quick to disagree with me on every point, nothing new in that.on 03/09/10Reply
- My question is..how is the process going to work now? How do Obama's new bill ideas get incorporated into the existing bill---that is assuming it passes--- Republicans can now feel more represented in the process than before, but how does that translate into any real legislation? More of a operational than political question i guess.on 03/09/10Reply
- The nuts and bolts of it is the Senate passed a health care bill by 60 votes under regular Senate rules just before Christmas. The Democrats plan is for the House to pass that exact bill, then it would go to the President to be signed in to law. That might be much easier to say than do. After that, there are still some issues the Democrats in the House have with the Senate bill that would need to be dealt with. The Democrats plan is to pass those amendments in the Senate using reconciliation that would only require 50 Senate votes plus the Vice-Presidents vote if needed for a total of 51. The House only needs a simple majority of 217 voteson 03/09/10Reply

- The Senate passed a health care reform bill last December the 24th by 60 votes under normal Senate rules. What the Democrats want to do is have the House pass that bill as it is worded. It would then go to the President for his signature into law. However, the House has problems with some of the features in the bill and that would be handled by the Senate passing some amendments to the bill to satisfy the House and those votes in the Senate would be done under the rules of reconciliation which requires a simple majority of 51 Senators or 50 plus the Vice-President’s vote that would break a tie. The House would pass then pass those amendments; the President would then sign them. The real trick will be Pelosi getting a majority in the House to vote for a bill they don’t like as is with a promise from the Senate to amend it.on 03/10/10Reply

- I have not read anything about cap and trade, but I did read in today’s New York Times that the Demos might add the overhaul of the federal student loan program and a budget package to the health care legislation, not that any of them are connected either. It is common to see bills get bundled together, tying a hard to pass bill with a must pass bill. It is not pretty, but it is how things have done back there for many years. There is an old metaphor that the two things you don’t want to see made are sausage and legislation. Sorry about drowning this link with the same message over and over. I just read that the President made a blunder in the State of the Union regarding his calling out the Sup. Ct. I heard it that he was sort of upset at the strike he made at McCain-Fiengold campaign law..that would allow company funding to go for media in support of candidates. BUT, the article said that HE actually said that the legislation they overturned was a 100 year old campaign finance law and that he was going to overrule it. Apparently, there have only been a couple of times in the HISTORY of the country that the President has even mentioned the Justices in the State of the Union speech and that this was VERY bad form on his part. The recent healthcare politics got a little slimy. What has happened in the Senate that majority votes cannot be taken anymore? Why can't our country see where these politicians REALLY stand on the issues and debate them in public and filibuster like the good old days? How come we need 60 votes to do anything? That is NOT the democratic way. I'm sorry, but both Republicans and Democrats alike have forgotten who they work for...the AMERICAN PEOPLE. I want to see some passion about the issues...not pontification about why we need to STOP reform. We all know the system is broken. The problem is our Republican politicians aren't interested in fixing it, just derailing it, so they can have a political advantage in the next election. Great new juice in here. First of all, can we talk about Baucus nominating his girlfriend to the White House for US attorney's office on her merits. Yeah, right. It will be interesting if her "merits" add up under the scrutiny of an ethics investigation. And the WH social secretary, who supposedly decided to forgo the usual protocol briefings upon entering the job from the former social secretaries which is the norm, is now not going to have to answer any questions about the party crasher problem. While I truly hope Obama proves worthy of this award for the sake of the global community, I think awarding it to him now is beyond ridiculous and such a transparent political move, that it is almost embarrasing. I feel like the weight of the prize was diminished by the committee's choice in this case. They may have been sending a message that they hope he accomplishes something in the future, but in the past this has been a testamony to what the recipient has already achieved. @panchita_jones: Margaret Mead once said "We must devise a system in which peace is more rewarding than war" and yes we can honor a leader who is working towards that goal. I think the most frustrating thing about our current administration is that they have moral, decent, humane ideas for not only our country but the world - however they are almost too respectful of everyone's opinions and aren't making as much progress as they could. Our last administration had questionable, selfish and arrogant ideas - however they didn't give a crap about differing opinions (he was the decider) and they steam-rolled their agenda through by whatever means necessary.on 10/09/09Reply

I just watched the kitchen table chat (which I love!) Michelle you hit the nail on the head when you said we live in a bubble and only listen to people who agree with us. I am a firm believer that a major guilty party in stoking the fire of division is the 24 hour news channels. Their commentary and non-fact based opinions are creating extremism. Rupert Murdoch took a gamble many years back, making a conscious decision to ditch objective journalism and tow the anti-government line of the Republican party's fringe base, hoping that his new network in the States would eventually win the ratings war by adopting a message crafted to scare people into watching its content. MSNBC followed suit with a liberal spin on it's stories. Meanwhile, CNN made a conscious decision to take the high road, remaining neutral out of fear that catering to the loony-bin base of any party would alienate advertisers. Then, a curious thing happened ... FOX's out-of-control spin machine beat CNN at the ratings game. Murdoch's spin strategy proved to be the most effective audience grabber and now sadly, CNN decided to play catch-up, altering it's strategy by tossing objective journalism aside and opening its doors to the same sort of infotainment drivel that made FOX News so successful. I sometimes feel a need to go to international news-sites to truly find out what is going on in our own country.on 10/05/09Reply

Politics is the business of power. Really politics has very little to do with government or governing or democracy or the "demos" in the Greek sense of the word.
