- Everyday Thoughts on Grandmas Raising Kids
-
When my oldest daughter gave birth to identical twin boys on 12-13-04, I was already raising her 4 year old daughter (my granddaughter, Sienna). I was faced with the possibility of my daughter adopting the twins out and could not accept losing part of my family like that. My daughter suffers from post-partum depression. She also was in the Army prior to having any babies and became alcoholic while enlisted. It was a huge disappointment when she came home from the Army, and right before starting college at UIC in Chicago, found out she was pregnant with my granddaughter. She was with the father at the time and they played house until the baby was 1 year old. By then, my granddaughter was with me all the time as my daughter had horrible mood swings and the unemployed dad began selling drugs with the baby present. Great, huh? There really was no choice ....I had to protect my grandchildren from my daughter, their fathers and the world in general. I am their court-ordered guardian now and have considered adopting them but, they have a mother such as she is and I will never give up on my daughter. In fact, I think we are finally in front of a judge that understands why she cannot pay her child support...she's an alcoholic and works as a bartender in a dive. It looks like the judge may force her to goto rehab. YEA! Even if she doesn't stay sober the first round of rehab, it will totally mess up her ability to get drunk and party because she will know she is doing the wrong thing and, hopefully, feel guilty enough to decide to get sober on her own. That's my plan and I am praying it works. It's not too late for her to mend her fences with her kids.on 09/25/10Reply
