Spring is in the air.  The birds and the bees are flitting around doing their thing…nature abounds.  The birds are feathering their nests and laying their eggs, while the bees are busy pollinating every flower in the garden.  The air is crisp and clean.  Chirping and buzzing fills the air.

Everything seems fresh and new.  So, let’s take a new look at Spring, shall we? The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning. Ugggh.  But, let's talk about the birds and the bees instead...the part of the story that happens...

Dear Mom, Thank You For Everything

I’m calling this our Kids’ Book for the month, but really it is for everybody. And honestly, it’s just too cute for words. I was drawn to it because my kids are BIG animal lovers and the black and white baby animal photography is adorable. Each page features a different animal and words written in the voice of a child (or adult) thanking mom for all the various and sundry things we do as we raise our kids and try our best to make them into good little people. Get this book and a picture of yourself with your mom or yourself with your child, frame it, and you’ve got the perfect Mothers’ Day Gift.

This is how this little gift book begins: “Mom, the other day I was rubbing my belly button and it really made me stop and think; what a funny little reminder of such an important connection.” I think about that sometimes, when my girls are laying with me or on me, when my older daughter is wearing my shoes and some of my clothes because she is so bleeping tall, and I think: they were inside me! (not at the same time, but still!) And sometimes I look at my mom and I think, I was inside of her! I know it’s life, and it just happens and all that, but I still think it’s pretty extraordinary—that we can make babies (with a little help) and our bodies make them grow and then we give birth to them and then our bodies can make milk to feed them! So cool! And that’s the easy part! (Plus, my older daughter used to have this funny habit of rubbing her belly button when she sucked her thumb and I used to have to cut little holes in her onesies or leave a button undone or a zipper down so she could get to her little belly button and eventually fall asleep. The next kid had a binky and a blankie—whatever it takes, right?) I can only hope that my kids would read this book and it would ring true to them and that some day they’ll want to thank me in this beautiful and hilarious way—not because I want or need the gratitude or recognition, but because I want to be that kind of mother for them, I want to show them the world and teach them and care for them and make them strong, safe and independent and always full of wonder.
