TIPPING OUR HAND:Opinionated MAMA’s Perspective on INTELLIGENCE

Osama Bin Laden is dead and we all want to know how.  We want the EXACT details.  How did we find him? What did the SEALS do? What was the plan and how was it executed from start to finish?  Well, guess what, MAMAs, some things we just don’t need to know.  Some things, in fact, its better that we don’t know.  Here’s why…because if WE know, then the bad guys know too. Here’s our opinion on the subject from last year (in fact, on May 5 of last year, weirdly!)  Read and let us know what you think!

——————————–

Authorities arrested an attempted terrorist bomber after only 53 hours.  The man had parked an explosive filled vehicle in the heart of Times Square and abandoned it.  A Good Samaritan reported the smoking car to police and the situation was diffused.  So began the manhunt. Apparently the suspect, Palestinian-American, Faisal Shahzad, was under surveillance for hours before boarding an Emirates plane at JFK bound for Dubai.

Now the media is having their fest.  It’s fun to speculate.  It’s a juicy story, made ever juicier by focusing on all of the things that went wrong.  No mention of the fact that New York law enforcement has prevented 11 other attacks since 9-11.  Instead all we see is the negative, publically identifying possible gaps in our systems. Why wasn’t Shahzad arrested before he had boarded the plane?  How come this guy had not been put on the no-fly list before, when he had been flying to and from Pakistan with frequency?  Did authorities almost lose him? Did they really?  Or, was this part of their strategy?  Have their recruitment strategies changed?  All good questions indeed.  But what concerns me, are the answers that are being bandied about on national (and international) television.  We don’t really know, nor should we know some details…otherwise, terrorists will know that we know and evade the system better next time.

How is it helpful to let the enemy know where our system might have failed? Does it serve our purpose to let them know that our cross referencing TSA, gun registrations, no fly lists and even police surveillance, was not good enough to keep this guy from boarding a plane? Does it serve our national interests to remind terrorists to go directly to the airport because there is a 7 hour gap until people are placed on the no fly list?  Or, to remind them not to leave their keys in the car because we can track them that way?  Or, to point out that even though they remove the vin number on the dash, there is a secret one on the engine?  Really?  Do we need to tell them that stuff, so they are even craftier next time?  How about we don’t make it easier for them to kill us? The bad guys may decide to set 15 different bombs in 15 metropolitan areas and have 15 different guys go directly to various airports to see if they can board planes, just to confuse us – a la 9-11.  We’ve been there…it didn’t go over well.

They must be thinking how easy it will be for them to take down a nation that does not understand the depth and breadth of their commitment to decimating all “infidels.”  How much fun was it for the Taliban to hear Mayor Bloomberg commenting that this was probably a guy disgruntled by the passing healthcare bill?  Seriously, your first thought about a bomb in the middle of Time Square in NYC is someone pissed off about healthcare, not that it was a terrorist act?  Tick tick tick…time wasted.  All they have to do is keep watching our news.  We need to be smarter.  How about telling them “we got our man…again…cuz we’re just that good?”

The point is, we need to be confusing and diffusing people that mean to do us harm.  Not giving them new ideas about how to improve their odds next time.  As moms, we know that in order to maintain order in our homes, we have to have eyes in the backs of our heads (or that’s what we tell our kids), and we “monitor” our kids-sometimes without them knowing (a.k.a., snooping).  That’s how we get our good “intel.”  The media could take a page from our stealth mommy book and keep it zipped, instead of spilling the beans.

I think I heard (via national news) how the guy apparently didn't use the right kind of fertilizer. If he had used this other fertilizer (which they actually named), then the bomb would have undoubtedly detonated. I think SNL should cover this. It's like we're saying: "Okay listen up all you Terrorists! Make sure you use the correct ingredients with proper measuring amounts (and we'll list them all right here so take notes), so you can have a better bombing experience." Good grief.

Great article. It's refreshing to hear another Mom that is concerned about these issues and you have such a great way of expressing yourself. It really amazes me sometimes how the media can put the type of information out there that could actually hurt us. They have to know these terrorists are way smarter then we give them credit.

    Party MAMAs

NO the Public does NOT need to know any of the details – that is why the SEALs were chosen (and or any other Special Op's at any given time) ….. it is their Code – to get in and get out. Sorry to say but the American Public does not NEED to know any of the details – it would just jeopardize future actions and missions and the Troops! We as American Citizens need respect and honor that, period!! Remember – we are the Mothers and Fathers who raised these boys into the Men they are today, the US Navy just took it from there at the boot camp doors! HooRah! **Please continue to support all the troops and their families of every Branch of the Military, they each and all have specific duties to do.
