Foxconn Technology Group, a major manufacturer of iPhones and Dell computers in China, is under scrutiny for abusive working conditions. There have been 12 suicides at its factories this year. Workers have been working overtime shifts of 35 hours at a pay of thirty-one cents an hour and living in dormitories housing up to 10 people in small rooms. Workers staged a rally in a stadium to protest and fight for fair working conditions. Foxconn has responded by raising salaries (30%), hiring counselors and has installed safety nets to catch those who might jump to their deaths. Foxxcom spokesperson, Louis Woo, said, “for a long period of time I think we were kind of blinded by our success…we were kind of caught by surprise.” The company is expected to hire 400,000 new workers this year and will build it’s new factories closer to worker’s homes.
MOMism: ”All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Life is short. Hard work is important, but there has to be a pay off – you have to be working toward something. A better life. Our kids need to learn balance…work hard and have some FUN. There is more to life than punching one little button for 35 hours at a time and literally working your finger to the bone!
We are lucky to live in a society where companies cannot literally work people to death. People are only able to take so much. But, at the same time, some people do need a swift kick in the pants from time to time to be more productive. Let this be the kick China and the world needs to do something about the imbalance in working conditions, compensation, quality of life that makes trading international goods a little like apples and oranges.
